Tire Dip in the Pacific Ocean 3/7/08
TireDipinthePacificOcean.JPG

My name is Mary Kay.  I am an avid road and mountain bike cyclist.  I have been planning this trip across the US for over a year now.  My website name is after my black cat, Zander.  It's also my geocaching name.  (That's GPS treasure hunting.)  I have another black cat named Junebug.  My cats are a lot of company to me.  They watch me clean and polish my bike, play hide and seek with me and perform daily surveillance of the homefront.  The cats love to garden with me and offer their assistance to me to grow large pumpkins.  While I'm gone, Junebug is in charge of Zander.   She helps keep him in line.   My husband and I wish Zander would take after her obedient nature, however, he seems to be a work in progress.  They also provide companionship to my husband while I'm out running around on my bike.

I am dedicating this ride in support of the Rocky Mountain Stroke Association.  In June of 2006 my sister suffered a severe stroke.  RMSA has been very supportive to her quest to improve her  lifestyle and help her regain back her independence and confidence.  This association helps stroke victims after regular health insurance coverage runs out.

Please help me raise funds for this organization by offering a contribution through the link on this page or please mail a check today to the association.  Please reference Zandercat, so we can keep track of my fundraising.  Thank you for your support to the association and to my personal quest.  Mary Kay   The is no deadline to make a donation.  It can be done at any time.

January 17, 2008 Are you training?
Everyone has been asking me this question.  Yes, I have been working very hard since October.  I take a one hour spin class at Colorado Athletic Club Downtown Denver 3 or 4 days a week.  I average approximately 23 miles during one class.  Some days are interval training other days are cadence training.  It's all about cadence.  I push myself to hit 90-100-110 rpm cadence work.  When I ride outdoors I try to keep my cadence above 86, that's a lot of work, especially in the hills, my alarm sounds off every 2 minutes that I am not maintaining speed.  Two other days during the week I strength train with a personal trainer.  My plan for next week is to try and increase my spin class to 5 or 6 days a week.  My concern at this time is my bike is new and I have only been able to ride outside 3 times.  So, it's not broken in yet and I need to pack it up and ship it off to San Diego the middle of February.  This week's challenge:  packing!  We are restricted to a total weight of 40 lbs. and 25 lbs. per bag.  Hmmm...it will be interesting.  I'll keep in touch. MK  P.S. We are working on the donation link and I need to get my web album fixed up at bit.
