Tire Dip in the Pacific Ocean 3/7/08
TireDipinthePacificOcean.JPG

My name is Mary Kay.  I am an avid road and mountain bike cyclist.  I have been planning this trip across the US for over a year now.  My website name is after my black cat, Zander.  It's also my geocaching name.  (That's GPS treasure hunting.)  I have another black cat named Junebug.  My cats are a lot of company to me.  They watch me clean and polish my bike, play hide and seek with me and perform daily surveillance of the homefront.  The cats love to garden with me and offer their assistance to me to grow large pumpkins.  While I'm gone, Junebug is in charge of Zander.   She helps keep him in line.   My husband and I wish Zander would take after her obedient nature, however, he seems to be a work in progress.  They also provide companionship to my husband while I'm out running around on my bike.

I am dedicating this ride in support of the Rocky Mountain Stroke Association.  In June of 2006 my sister suffered a severe stroke.  RMSA has been very supportive to her quest to improve her  lifestyle and help her regain back her independence and confidence.  This association helps stroke victims after regular health insurance coverage runs out.

Please help me raise funds for this organization by offering a contribution through the link on this page or please mail a check today to the association.  Please reference Zandercat, so we can keep track of my fundraising.  Thank you for your support to the association and to my personal quest.  Mary Kay   The is no deadline to make a donation.  It can be done at any time.

Meet my new traveling companion-Where's Wibley?
Junie and Zander wanted to send a representative along with me on the tour.  They are sending Wibley along to keep me company.  You can see Wibley on my web album.  I don't think he will be too much of a bother.  He's a bit small, so you'll have to watch carefully for his appearance in future photos.    Below is a link to a wonderful article written by Kevin Denke.

Two Week Countdown!
Hello everyone.  I am within 2 weeks of leaving to begin my bike trip.  I am busy packing, re-packing, and starting all over again.  My bike has arrived safely in San Diego.  I am now attending indoor spinning classes whenever I can and I hope to increase my strength training the next two weeks.  Thank you everyone for your support and good wishes.  I am anxious to get started.  We hope to have the online donation working very soon.  There is no deadline to donate, it can be done at any time.  You can also mail in a check donation.  You can reference Zandercat or Riding for Rehab.  I leave for San Diego on Monday March 3rd.  I will be hanging out a few days and enjoying the Mission Bay area.  On Thursday, we have an orientation meeting, a flat tire clinic and weigh-in of luggage.  Anything over 40 lbs. will get mailed home.  How is a girl to shop?  Later that evening we have a banquet and get ready to start the ride the next day March 7.   We will have a photo session at the Ocean Beach Park at 9:00 a.m. as we dip our rear wheels into the Pacific and start to ride East for the next 4 days.  I'll post an update from Blythe, CA which is our first day of rest.    We'll need it because after Blythe, CA we ride 8 days consecutively.  Whew!  It will be interesting.  Watch for photos and future updates!  MK
